I wanted to start off by introducing you, to where I spend most of my time.
This Piece of property has been passed down my husbands side of the family. It’s where I attended countless high school bonfires, our first home together overlooked this piece of land, & we spent many of our younger days talking about building a home and starting our life on this land. Now here we are, 8 years later and our dreams are coming true.
Now when we started, the property did not reflect the picture above. I actually took this picture to post on the well known Facebook, to show all my family and friends what we had accomplished so far ( & of course that beautiful sunset, come-on now, lets be real). The grass was almost as tall as I was, the Tree-line had countless pine tree saplings trying to take over, and lets not begin to discuss the time I spent weed-eating and clearing the fence-line.

Above you see a good lets say, mid-way point in my clearing efforts. We pulled the poisonious vines that completly camouflaged the building to the right ( & then proceeded to itch for weeks on end). I mowed what I could, just to find dead grass underneath; & made two burn piles, which now a year later can hopefully be narrowed down to one. Needless to say, I basically got the majority of the property cleared, but still have some work to do around the edges.
So yesterday after work, I proceeded to take a walk around the property, and start my Spring Yard work list ( Yes, I know Im behind, It’s almost April). I looked at the back fence-line, noting to myself that all my dead vines still need to be pulled off, made another mental note that I really need to sow some grass seed before it was too late this year as well. As I kept walking up my tree line, I realized that there are so many pine saplings trying to grow already ( Yikes!). I know that if I leave them, they will grow and kill my beautiful Cyprus tree line I have shielding our property from our neighbors.
As I continue on, my list keeps growing and growing ( much like everything on my property obviously). As I make it up the property line, right behind the building, I found my last straw. There are so many Black Locust Tree Saplings growing back there, and they have been there for Lord knows how long. I start looking at them to make a game plan, but just looking at these vine covered, thorned trees straight from you know where, I’m already exhausted. How I am I supposed to work full time, Keep a home, Cook, Garden and so on while keeping up with this land? Now granted about this time I remind myself, “Girl, you grew up on 10 times as much land, how did you all do it then? “. Then It hit me… Goats! That’s exactly how we did it! We kept up with our yard, and around the house/ barns/buildings etc. But the goats kept up with the other 20 Acres.
Now, Lets be realistic. With 10 times less land, I dont need many to get the job done. So Im thinking 1 goat could actually do what needs to be done over the course of this year, and then keep up with everything after that. But again, they are herd animals, so I need more than one. So eventually after an afternoon of deliberating, I decided on 2 Pygmy goats. That way I get 2 goats to keep them from being lonely, but at the same time wont run out of Land for them (Also, because they are adorable!!) . So now the search begins. Hopefully in the next few weeks I can find a breeder, and get everything together to bring them home. So here’s to letting the goats help me with keeping up with the land, and giving me time to tackle my next project.
